THE MYTH
OF NWT
Light art installation- Creative coding
This installation thoughtfully integrates the site-specific natural and architectural elements of Boston's waterfront with a color palette inspired by the Egyptian Mediterranean port of Alexandria. This approach creates a layered sensory experience that connects two distinct coastal identities across time and geography.
Conceptually, the project draws on Nut (Nwt), the Ancient Egyptian goddess of the sky and cosmos, translating her mythological narrative into a dynamic visual journey. The installation captures the motion of stars across the night sky, inviting visitors to engage with this celestial rhythm. Nut's role as both mother and cosmic guide is woven throughout the experience, connecting ancient mythology to contemporary spatial storytelling.
The work exemplifies a synthesis of cultural history, environmental context, and immersive design. It creates a contemplative environment that encourages reflection on identity, place, and the universal human relationship to the cosmos—bridging the ancient Mediterranean world with Boston's modern waterfront through shared experiences of sky, water, and navigation.
Role & Contributions
- Creative Direction & Concept: Designed to evoke a connection between mythology, nature, and modern technology, Nut explores celestial themes through immersive visual and spatial experiences.
- Execution: Leveraged real-time NASA data and generative visuals to depict celestial activity and aurora lights, reinforcing the narrative.
- Visual & Interaction Design: Crafted an arched line motif to symbolize Nut, offering an immersive interpretation of her guiding role.
- Data Integration: Incorporated astronomical datasets to authentically merge ancient mythology with contemporary science.
Technical
- First phase uses NASA's dataset portal to present real-time activity of the night stars, paired with slow-flowing aurora lights to symbolize Nut's entrance.
-
The progression sets the stage for the second phase, where Nut is revealed through an arched line, symbolizing her guidance in the night sky.
-
The second phase introduces additional stars, enriching the immersive experience for the audience.
