KOHLER SALONE 2024

Exhibition design - Creative coding + Lighting

For Kohler's custom-built installation at Milan Design Week, I contributed as both lighting designer and visual concept developer, shaping the overall narrative and producing projection model studies that guided the immersive experience.

Visitors were led through the space by the sensory language of water and the shifting temperatures of light—from warm, golden tones to cooler, deeper hues. These transitions mirrored the journey of water itself while evoking the emotional shifts it can inspire. The interplay between lighting and visual content created a rhythmic, almost meditative pace that invited visitors to move intuitively through the space.

At the heart of the installation was a central lounge where guests could pause beneath a dome projection. Overhead, raindrops fell slowly, one by one, creating a suspended sense of time and presence. The sky above shifted gradually—from the brightness of the sun to a soft, aquatic glow—mimicking the sensation of looking up from beneath the surface of water.

This central area functioned as a multifunctional hub for rest, informal business conversations, and deeper exploration of Kohler's offerings. Whether stopping briefly to recharge or staying to engage with the brand's story, visitors found themselves fully immersed in a world where light, water, and design converged to create a lasting impression.

Role & Contributions

  1. Concept Development: Contributed to the ideation and refinement of the installation's immersive concept, focusing on its narrative and technical feasibility.

  2. Client Presentations: Delivered comprehensive presentations, including visual simulations and coded generative designs, to communicate the creative direction and secure client approval.

  3. Visual Development: Designed and coded generative visuals for the installation, including water drop and rain drop simulations, using TouchDesigner.

  4. Lighting Renders and Simulations: Created 3D visual simulations and lighting renders to depict the ambiance and enhance the project's immersive experience.

  5. Installation Planning: Conducted studies and 3D modeling to optimize projector placement and ensure precise content mapping onto the structure.

  6. Coordination: Collaborated with local contractors at Salone del Mobile to oversee the installation and ensure the final execution aligned with the design intent.

-projection mapping & visual content studies

Technical

  • Conducted 3D modeling in Rhino to study the booth's structure and determine the optimal number of projectors required for seamless visual projection.

  • Developed mapping studies to analyze how content would interact with and be projected onto the dome structure.

  • Designed and coded water drop and rain drop simulations using TouchDesigner, presenting generative, looping visuals to the client for design approval.

  • Iterated simulations on a generative framework to ensure smooth looping and alignment with the installation's immersive goals.

  • Finalized and refined the approved visual designs, overseeing their installation and accurate mapping on-site to bring the project to completion.
